Located between the Damxung County in Lhasa and Baingoin County in Nagqu, Lake Namtso is the highest salt water lake in the world at the altitude of 4718 meters and the largest lake in Tibet. ‘Namtso’ means holy lake or sacred lake, the holy land in pilgrims’ heart. As one of the third holy lake in Tibet, Lake Namtso is also the top holy lake for Yongzhong Bonism.
The five islands in the lake are regarded as the embodiment of five Buddhas. Every pilgrim will devoutly pay religious homage to them. Especially in year of goat in Tibetan calendar, numerous believers from not olny Tibet but also Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan even travel long distances to make pilgrimage to Lake Namtso for transcendence of soul.
